Managing your PayPal E-Mail Addresses

People are often confused about how PayPal handles e-mail addresses so a short explanation is required.

What makes things a little bit confusing is that PayPal using an e-mail address as a "login" to the account, but also allows multiple e-mail addresses to be associated with the account.

In our experience it is not a good idea to use a personal e-mail address for as the name of your PayPal account. (for example "joe@hotmail.com")  When we setup your e-mail address for use with NeatClubs, we will generally recommend that we create a "payments@domainname.com" e-mail that simply re-directs e-mail to the personal e-mail account for financial administrator for the club or business.

This approach has several advantages:

The account need not be tied to one person.  The PayPal account can stay the same even if the administrator changes.
People can easily change their e-mail provider or e-mail address without impacting the PayPal setup
Customers will see a more professional name like "payments" as opposed to a person's name in acknowledgement e-mails generated by PayPal.
When people go on vacation or leave, the recipients of e-mail from PayPal can be temporarily changed behind the scenes.

PayPal allows you to associate multiple e-mail addresses with an account, but in most cases only one will be needed.

Multiple e-mail addresses are handy if you want multiple people in the organization to see all payment notifications as an example.

One e-mail address will always need to be designated as the "primary" e-mail address for the account.  We like to use "payments" for this purpose.  We have the "payments" e-mail re-direct, and we like to use this same e-mail address as the login for the account so there are less things to remember.  Some types of PayPal transactions (payment confirmation for a recurring subscription as an example) will only be sent to the primary PayPal address.

If you want to change one or more of the e-mail addresses assigned to your account, the steps are:

a) Login into PayPal  - visit http://paypal.com and enter the login (e-mail address) and password that you used when you created the account/

b) Select "My Account"

c) Select "Profile"

Under the profile you will have the option to add or change the e-mail addresses associated with your PayPal account.
